On 28 March, 2022 Lithuanian State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) issued two permits to SE Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant for industrial operation of solid radioactive waste management and storage facilities.

In order to obtain permits for industrial operation of nuclear facilities, submitting safety assessment documents for review, SE Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant had to prove that, taking into account all the changes made in regulations and during operation of the nuclear facilities, results of testing program using nuclear and/or nuclear fuel cycle materials and other factors that may affect safety, it is ensured that these nuclear facilities and the activities envisaged to perform in them are in compliance with the requirements of the designs, legal acts and nuclear safety technical normative documents and can be operated safely in an industrial manner.

These nuclear facilities have radioactive waste reception equipment, sorting chambers of different activity radioactive waste, radioactive waste characterization equipment, incineration, pressing, conditioning and two separate storage compartments, one for the storage of 2,500 m3 of short-lived waste and the other for 2,000 m3 of long-lived waste. Radioactive waste can be stored in this storage for up to 50 years.

VATESI issued a license to operate solid radioactive waste management facilities in October 2017.
