VATESI issued a permit to start commercial operation of New Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility

On 4 May 2017, Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) successfully completed hot tests with 10 new design casks and demonstrated that it is ready to operate safely Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility.

Lithuanian State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) issued a permit to start commercial operation of the new Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (ISFSF, B1 Project) to Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP).

After VATESI inspectors reviewed results of completed hot test (test with materials used in nuclear fuel cycle), performed inspections, checked other information provided by Ignalina NPP it was concluded, that all activities related to spent fuel handling in INPP units, shipment to the storage facility and storage comply with approved technical design documentation and final safety analysis report. That was basis to issue the permit.

According to INPP plan, all spent fuel from units should be moved for storage to the new Interim Spent Fuel Storage facility until the end of 2022.

New Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility is located in Visaginas municipality in the premises of INPP in Lithuania. Spent fuel will be stored in specifically designed casks CONSTOR®RBMK1500/M2. The full loaded cask will weight 118 tones. INPP plans to store about 190 containers with 17000 spent fuel rods in a period of 50 years.
