Interim results of the Norwegian project "Development of the Lithuanian Nuclear Early Warning System" discussed

On 27 April, 2023 the Fire and Rescue Department under Ministry of Internal Affairs hosted a conference of the Norway grants-funded project "Development of the Lithuanian Nuclear Early Warning System". One of the main objectives of this project is to provide timely warning and ensure safety to the population in the event of a nuclear or radiological emergency at Belarusian NPP.

Project activities, for implementation of which VATESI is responsible, are aimed at strengthening the capacity of VATESI to carry out the functions foreseen in the State Plan for the Protection of the Population in the Event of a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency: to predict the course of possible nuclear or radiological accident at a nuclear facility and to characterise the release of radionuclides into the environment.

During the conference, VATESI specialists provided information on the planned acquisition of special software to be used for more accurate forecasting the course of possible accidents at nuclear power facilities and for determining the characteristics of radionuclide releases to the environment. They also participated in discussions on preparations for an exercise planned for autumn next year in Lithuania.

All project activities are aimed at acquiring tools and technologies for early warning of nuclear or radiological incidents and strengthening the competences of specialists. The project will improve our country's preparedness to warn the population of an imminent danger, to predict possible consequences, to take protective actions by authorities, and to make recommendations to the population on how to protect themselves from the harmful effects of ionising radiation.
