National Report successfully presented in Review Meeting of Convention on Nuclear Safety

On 23 March 2023, Lithuanian delegation presented National Report in the Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS). This report reflects activities of nuclear facility operators and Government institutions during six-year period in ensuring implementation of obligations under the Convention.

National Report presents information about performed activities in ensuring safety of permanently shut down Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, decontaminating and dismantling no more needed systems and spent fuel management. Implemented safety measures under Vienna Declaration on Nuclear Safety and emergency preparedness measures for the Belarusian NPP also were presented during the meeting.

Lithuania condemned the military aggression of the Russian Federation, which threatens the nuclear safety and security of Ukraine's nuclear facilities during presentation of the National Report.

Lithuania received 102 questions from reviewing countries: Belarus, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Indonesia, Japan, North Macedonia, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Saudi Arabia, United States of America. All questions were answered in detail and are available on the VATESI website.

Participating countries were interested on how nuclear safety issues related to safety culture are being resolved, spent fuel management, reactor dismantling technologies, public participation in licensing processes, the actions taken in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of the safety performance of the shutdown of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and other nuclear facilities. The discussions during the meeting also included the topics on emergency preparedness and decommissioning financing. Lithuania`s measures taken in response to the situation in Ukraine's nuclear facilities in the wake of the military aggression by Russia were discussed during the meeting as well.

The countries present at the presentation agreed that Lithuania is fulfilling its obligations under the Convention on Nuclear Safety.

Lithuania ratified the Convention in 1996.
