Nuclear facilities in Lithuania

Nuclear facility is nuclear power plant, energy unit of a nuclear power plant, nuclear reactor which is generally not used for power generation (research reactors), nuclear material storage facility and radioactive waste management facility.  

The largest and most important nuclear facility in Lithuania is Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (Ignalina NPP), which was permanently shut down in 2009. Ignalina NPP decommissioning works are underway and new nuclear facilities for the radioactive waste management have been built or are under construction. All facilities for the management of waste generated during the operation and decommissioning of the Ignalina NPP are located or under construction near the Ignalina NPP in the territory of Visaginas Municipality.

Another nuclear facility, the Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility, is located in the Bartkuškis Forest in Municipality of Širvintai District. This Radon-type storage facility was closed in 1989. Radioactive waste that had been generated at industrial, medical and scientific research facilities and collected in 1963–1989, is stored there. In the future, this waste, as well as radionuclide-contaminated structures and soil, has to be removed from the storage facility, sorted and shipped to the Ignalina NPP radioactive waste management facilities, where it will be treated and temporarily stored and later placed in the waste disposal facilities.

All Lithuanian nuclear facilities are operated by State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.

State supervision of the activities of Lithuanian nuclear facilities is performed by the State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI).
