VATESI authorised hot trials of solid radioactive waste treatment facility

On 12 October 2017, State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) issued a licence to Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) for operation of solid radioactive waste treatment and storage facilities.

Operating license authorize INPP for the commissioning of the solid radioactive waste treatment equipment and starting hot trials. During hot trials, radioactive waste will be sorted, treated (incinerated, compacted) characterised, and conditioned (project B3/4). Conditioned solid radioactive waste after temporary storage will be moved to near surface disposal facility (project B25-1). Disused sealed sources and radioactive waste, which due to characteristics is not acceptable to near surface disposal facility will be placed into storage containers and moved to the storage facility. On such trials, compliance of the solid radioactive waste treatment and storage facilities equipment with design will be tested.

When INPP completes hot trials and demonstrates compliance of the solid radioactive waste treatment technology with the established requirements, VATESI will grant a permit for commercial operation of the equipment. Then INPP starts to characterise, sort, condition and transport for storage the solid radioactive waste accumulated during operation and decommissioning process of the plant.

All radioactive waste accumulated in INPP territory shall be managed in safe manner and without any risk to people and environment.
