Emergency preparedness exercise ECUREX-2017

On 28 March 2017 State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) took part in the international emergency preparedness exercise ECUREX-2017 organized by European Commission (EC). Exercise was held in order to evaluate and improve response arrangements and capabilities of the EC and its Member States with regard to nuclear and radiological emergencies.

During the simulated accident in the Paks Nuclear Power Plant (Hungary) VATESI partly activated the Emergency Centre and pursued functions of the contact center with other Lithuanian authorities. VATESI specialists provided them official information from foreign countries received through the EC and IAEA information exchange system, analyzed the course of the accident and predicted the possible consequences, prepared press releases and information for the general public.

Participation in the EC exercises helps to improve preparedness and respond to nuclear accidents of Lithuanian authorities and allows them to test all technical and organizational measures for proper operation in such situations.
