On April 7, 2023 Lithuanian State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) made decision to approve site safety evaluation report for planned disposal facility of bituminous radioactive waste. The site is in Visaginas municipality Ignalina NPP territory.

VATESI specialists have reviewed and assessed the site evaluation carried out by State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and came to conclusion that evaluation report meets the safety requirements.

Puplic were invited to review the draft decision and related documents and submit their proposals.  No proposals were received from the public within the three months term of familiarization and submission of proposals established in the Law on Nuclear Safety.

For decision taking regarding the possibility of upgrading the bituminous radioactive waste storage facility State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant in the next stages will prepare an environmental impact assessment report, a project for the reconstruction of this storage facility and safety justification documents for the disposal, which will be reviewed and evaluated by VATESI.

The planned upgrade of the bituminous radioactive waste storage facility involves strengthening the building structures of this facility, installing additional engineering barriers and covering the facility with waterproofing and protective soil layers of various characteristics, and implementing technical and organisational measures for the facility maintenance after its closurein accordance with established requirements.
