VATESI specialists in Slovakia shared their experience in the field of inspections

On October 10–14, 2022, a group of VATESI specialists visited Slovakia, where they shared their experience in the field of inspections of economic entities with representatives of the country's nuclear safety regulatory authority.

During the visit, VATESI specialists familiarised with the activities of inspections of economic entities performed by the Slovak regulatory authority, as well as with the legal and regulatory system of radioactive waste management and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. Specialists discussed aspects of assurance of radiation safety during decommissioning of nuclear facilities and radioactive waste management, the methodology for evaluation of compliance with free release criteria.

While visiting the Bohunice nuclear power plant’ V1 units that are under decommissioning, representatives of operating company JAVYS  have presented the decommissioning process and demonstrated the specific decommissioning and related radioactive waste management works that currently being carried out.

Technical visits, organized under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) European Region Technical Cooperation Program, help Lithuanian nuclear safety professionals to improve their knowledge and share experience, familiarise with the best practices of other countries' regulatory and supervisory authorities in handling radioactive waste, building and operating new nuclear facilities.
